COAL TESTING METHODS

A. MOISTURE CONTENT

Aim: - To calculate moisture content in given coal sample.

Equipment: - oven, crucible, desiccators, weighing balance.

Procedure: -

1. Take W1 gm of coal to weighed crucible

2. Keep it in oven at 105°C for 2 hours.

3. Cool it in desiccators.

4. Take weight of sample with crucible.

5. Keep it in oven again at 105°C for 2 hours..

6. Till the resultant weight is constant.

Calculations: -

 Moisture content: -   [(W1-W2)  / W1 x 100]

W1: - weight of sample before drying
W2: - weight of sample of after drying

B. VOLATILE MATTERS:-

Aim: - To calculate volatile matters present in given coal sample

Equipment: - Muffle furnace, desiccators, weighing balance.

Procedure: -

1. Take Wa gm of sample & keep it in muffle furnace.

2. Heat steadily up to 925°C.

3. Maintained at 925°C for about 7 minute.

4. Take it in desiccators.

5. Take weight of sample.

Calculations:-

Volatile Matter % = [(Wa-Wb) /Wa x 100]  [moisture content]

Wa= weight of sample before heating in muffle furnace.
Wb=weight of sample after heating at 925°C

C. ASH CONTENT

Aim: - To determine ash content in given coal sample

Equipment: - Muffle furnace, crucible,

Procedure:-

1. Grind coal to small pieces

2. Separate the powder.

3. Weigh 1 gm of fine powder in preweighted crucible.

4. Weigh again 1 gm powder in another preweighted crucible.

5. Keep it in muffle furnace at 500-530°C for 15 min.

6. Raise temperature to 830 -850°C keep for 1 hr.

7. Cool the furnace temperature to 600°C & remove the crucible.

After cooling weigh both the crucible.

Calculations:-

Ash content= [(wt of sample before-wt of sample after/ wt of sample before* 100]
